I have another thought on McGwire and the Hall of Fame. I was thinking driving home what he did to the game of baseball. How dare he seek forgiveness with tears in his eyes and his voices cracking? What a farce. He said he started using steroids in 1989. What he did to The Maris family was unconscionable. He used them for his own gain knowing that he was cheating.
He told Bob Costas that he would have hit 70 HRs even if he never took steroids. Well, a closer look at his career will show he was a life time 260 hitter and only hit more than 40 HRs in 4 seasons leading up to 1998 and his 70 HRs breaking Roger Maris record. In the 14 seasons prior to his record breaking year he averaged 27 HRs a year. We really don’t know what his career states would have looked like because he admits to having only 2 full seasons in which he did not take steroids.
