The Volunteer Defense

The Volunteers defense last year finished 28th in the nation. In the SEC that means a 6-7 record. To beat Alabama, Florida, Georgia you need a world class defense and the Volunteers just may have one of the best defensive teams not only in the country but in the SEC.

The Vols under new defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri, who was Alabama’s linebacker coach the past three years have gone to a 3-4 scheme with the front 3 anchored by Maurice Couch 6’2 299, massive Daniel McCullers 6’6 390 and Daniel Hood 6’4 295.

The D line will be backed up by 4 of the most active linebackers in Tennessee recent Vol history Herman Lathers (75 tackles), Curt Maggitt (3rd team freshman All American), AJ Johnson (1st team freshman All American) and Jaques Smith.

The defensive backs are led by Prentiss Waggner, Eric Gordon, Marsalis Teague and Justin Coleman. All four backs are athletic and fast.

The Volunteers have the talent on defense to be a very special group of players. Look for the Vols defense to swarm and tackle, two specialties of Sunseri led teams. The Vols will surprise the SEC this year and one reason will be their defense.

Lets Go Vols
